FREE Prostate Cancer Screening
09/06/2010
Nash Health Care, in conjunction with Rocky Mount Urology Associates, will offer FREE prostate cancer screenings to men who:
- are age 50 and older
- are African-American and age 45 and over
- have a family history of prostate cancer.
The screenings will be held on Oct. 7 and 21. Appointments are required and may be made by calling 962-3466.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death in men (lung cancer is first). One in six men will develop prostate cancer, and according to the American Cancer Society estimates that in 2010, about 217,700 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 32,050 men will die from prostate cancer. African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer have an increased risk for developing the disease.
Suzanne Buchanan, community wellness coordinator for Nash Health Care, stated that there is no question that these free health screenings save lives---in fact, more than 80 percent of past participants admit that they would have not have seen a physician if it were not for the free health screenings.
