Digital Mammography Earns ACR Accreditation

03/12/2009

The digital mammography services at Nash Day Hospital recently earned a three-year accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Mammograms - X-rays of the breast-play a vital role in detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages, which increases the chances of successful treatment. Nash Day Hospital recently installed new digital mammography equipment. Whereas traditional mammograms recorded images on X-ray film that would later be examined by the radiologist, digital mammography utilizes digital technology so that the image can be viewed on a computer monitor---which provides greater detail, and greater accuracy.

"ACR accreditation is a very detailed process that evaluates every aspect of your mammography facility, from equipment to personnel qualifications and we are very excited about this accomplishment," said Beth Pearsall, lead mammographer. "We are even more excited to have this technology available in our local community; it will help hundreds of area women in their battle against cancer. This technology will provide our patients with the highest quality of care in the early detection of breast cancer."

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. The ACR serves more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, and nuclear medicine and medical physicians with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Women 40 years of age should receive a mammogram every year, depending upon her physician's  recommendations and her family risk of breast cancer. A study has shown digital mammography is better for women who have dense breasts, women who are less than 50 years old, and pre- or perimenopausal women.

To schedule a mammogram at Nash Day Hospital, speak with your OB/GYN or family physician.
