Nurse coordinators and physicians from across the country attended a Legato Medical Systems conference held in the Nash Health Care Claude Mayo Surgery Pavilion. The conference was an opportunity for health care workers to learn about the innovative techniques used to treat heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disorder, or GERD.

Legato Medical Systems affiliates with local medical communities to establish exclusive health care centers that identify and treat patients suffering from heartburn and Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The Claude Mayo Jr Surgery Pavilion is known as the headquart/files/press/eck.jpgers of the Rocky Mount Heartburn Treatment Center, a "one-stop shop" for heartburn treatment that is the first of its kind in the nation.The Rocky Mount Heartburn Treatment Center has served as a model for other heartburn treatment centers across the country and has drawn patients from as far away as Canada.

Dr. John Pandolfino, nationally recognized expert on gastroenterology, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Pandolfino earned his MD from  Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, his residency training in internal medicine and his fellowship training in gastroenterology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He also has a degree in clinical investigation and has published extensively on gastrointestinal complications in surgery, pH monitoring of esophageal acid exposure, clinical use of esophageal manometry, and therapies and management of disorders of gastrointestinal motility.

Other presenters included members of the Nash Health Care Medical Staff: Dr. Chris Dengler and Dr. David Eckert.
