NHCS Nurse One of the Best 100 Nurses in North Carolina

09/11/2007

When she was 12 years old, Mary Strickland had to write a school English paper on the topic of what she wanted to do when she grew up. While many at that age may still be working through the fantasies of becoming movie stars, Strickland was already moving toward a choice that she says was much more than a career---it was a calling.

"I have always known that this is what I wanted to be," she said. "I really do believe that I was called to go into the nursing profession."

Strickland's dedication has been rewarded by being named in the Great 100, Inc-establishing her as one of the top 100 nurses in North Carolina. The Great 100 is a grassroots organization that seeks to recognize nursing excellence and provide scholarships to NC nursing programs.

Strickland, who lives in Nashville, earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and her master's degree in nursing from East Carolina University. For almost 5 years she worked in the neonatal ICU unit at Duke University Medical Center, and she taught nursing classes for one year at Nash Community College and then for five years at Barton College.

Strickland's nursing interests have focused on pediatrics, infants and labor and delivery.

"I have always loved babies, and especially working in labor and delivery as a whole-the birthing process is a miracle, and it is a miracle we get to witness everyday. It is truly an amazing experience," she said.

Strickland also owns Cedar Isle Dairy with her husband, Mike. Mary Strickland is also very involved in the Nash County 4H Club, which provides area youth valuable information on careers, responsibility and leadership. Strickland's own children, Cole and Casey, have been regular participants in the 4H annual meat animal show and sale. Originally from Chesapeake, VA, Strickland is also very involved in her church, Cornith Baptist Church. Recently, Strickland became a certified nurse examiner, which enables her to provide local medical examiner services to the county.

"This has really enabled me to help families as they struggle to deal with their loss, and it gives you an opportunity to make a difference," she said.
