What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy and how does it heal wounds?
07/16/2007
Nash Health Care Systems is scheduled to launch the Nash Wound Care Center is an outpatient program in August. This program will work in conjunction with the patient's primary care physician. The specially trained staff at the Nash Wound Care Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive treatment using the most technologically advanced wound care therapy.
One of the treatments used in wound care therapy is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in which the patient is placed into a clear plastic hyperbaric chamger and breathes a high concentration of oxygen. Below are some commonly asked questions about hyperbaric oxygen chambers.
For more information, contact the Nash Wound Care Center at 451-HEAL.
What is a hyperbaric oxygen chamber?
This is an enclosed chamber into which oxygen is pumped. The oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber is at a higher concentration and pressure than oxygen normally inhaled. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers aren't new---in fact they've been around since the 1940s, when they were used to treat decompression sickness in divers.
How does a hyperbaric oxygen chamber help my wound?
Because patients in a hyperbaric chamber are inhaling pure oxygen, this increase in oxygen in the blood stimulates the growth of blood vessels, which is an absolute necessity in helping skin to heal and form healthy tissue again.
Does it hurt?
No. Hyperbaric therapy is a non-invasive treatment. You may even watch television while you receive treatment!
What if I'm claustrophobic (afraid of closed spaces)?
Actually, the oxygen chamber is not an enclosed space. In fact, it's made of clear plastic. You can even watch TV or watch a movie during treatment. However, if you are anxious, our team of health care workers and physicians will do everything we can to help you relax and ensure that you have a positive and beneficial health care experience.
Who is associated with the Nash Wound Care Center?
Mack Moore serves as the program director of the Nash Wound Care Center. Dr. Stuart Todd serves as the medical director. Other staff physicians include Dr. Frederick Kroncke, Dr. Doug Boyette, Dr. Guy Maclang, Dr. Adolfo Marsigli and Dr. Eduardo Marsigli.
Can I still keep my regular family physician?
Yes! In fact, you will remain a patient of your primary care physician. The services at the Nash Wound Care Center are meant to complement the services already offered by your current physician's practice. You will be returned to the care of your primary physician after your wound care treatment.
